AI in Arbitration: Promises and Pitfalls – Lord Neuberger, Sir Geoffrey Vos and former Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk KC in conversation with experts from the tech sector and legal practice
4 Jun 16:30 - 18:00
Please join us for a high-calibre interdisciplinary panel discussion exploring how AI is redefining the possibilities, and the boundaries, of international arbitration. We are privileged to host a former UK Supreme Court President and leading arbitrator, a former Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, leading international practitioners and academic experts, and a cutting-edge legal tech developer. The event will be followed by a reception.
The panel discussion will explore the role of AI in arbitration, which offers significant opportunities to enhance efficiency in legal services and predictability of outcomes while also raising important concerns about maintaining party trust.
Arbitration's foundational commitment to party autonomy creates a uniquely fertile environment for AI innovation and creative application. From early merits assessment and damages quantification to settlement facilitation, AI tools are already opening new avenues for efficiency and predictive insight.
At the same time, the use of AI may challenge the trust of parties in the arbitral process. It may also serve as an indicator for the future use of AI in disputes adjudication more generally, offering insight into how AI assistance in the lifecycle of the dispute resolution process could eventually transform court systems, with broader implications for the rule of law.
This panel will also examine the challenges associated with AI adoption, including issues of risk, governance and collaboration, as key foundations for responsible integration of AI in arbitration. It will also reflect more broadly on the implications for legal culture and the rule of law.
This event is co-convened by Jones Day and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), through BIICL’s Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and Centre for Comparative Law.
